PROJECT SUMMARY:

Although this design would qualify for a LEED Platinum rating even at a mere $97/ sq. ft., its most innovative design features focus on snow belt lifestyles rather than energy or affordability.

Responding to the needs of life in the north, these homes are equipped with additional storage for winter clothes and outdoor "gear"; wider roof overhangs to provide sheltered walking; and landscape plantings specifically configured to mitigate wind. But the most innovative feature is the shared sun spaces, like neighborhood alleys that run through the middle of each grouping. Note how the living and dining spaces open directly onto protected areas in the alleys.

Normally, the smaller homes designed for budget and energy conservation result in tighter spaces. While such designs work well for the outdoor lifestyles of the sun belt, they only exacerbate the "cabin fever" that can be all too typical in snowy regions.

By creating year-round community spaces, these neighborhood alleys are particularly welcoming for the very young and the very old - two demographics that work well together and are often inadequately considered by typical "affordable" designs. Note also that these alleys allow on-street parking with easy, sheltered access to all units.
