PROJECT SUMMARY:
In our approach to the project, we looked to harness the natural energy sources inherent at the site. Its strong southern orientation and open setting provided a great opportunity to exploit the solar energy this setting receives daily. Through careful study of sun- path, site development and building massing and detailing, we were able to create a solution that uses the site’s natural energy sources while also providing a sense of community.
Buildings of two different types are arranged around a shared agricultural “common”. Small studio units provide much-needed housing for single people, while three-bedroom homes are fully adaptable to accommodate both young families and the aging sector.
Building mass, passive solar exploitation and simple mechanical supplementation supply ample heat in this Snow Belt setting. Roof overhangs and solar screening provide summer shading, and a high-efficiency tight building envelope creates a comfortable living space.
